India Paris Agreement Commitment
India`s Paris Agreement Commitment: A Closer Look
In December 2015, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) held its 21st annual meeting in Paris, where the historic Paris Agreement was adopted by 195 countries. The aim of the agreement was to limit the global temperature rise to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit it to 1.5°C.
As one of the world`s largest emitters of greenhouse gases, India`s role in the agreement is crucial for achieving its objectives. India`s commitment to the Paris Agreement is based on three key pillars: mitigation, adaptation, and finance.
Mitigation
India has pledged to reduce the emissions intensity of its gross domestic product (GDP) by 33-35% below 2005 levels by 2030. This means that while India`s emissions will continue to increase in absolute terms, they will do so at a slower rate than the country`s economic growth. The government`s target is to install 175 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2022, comprising 100 GW of solar, 60 GW of wind, 10 GW of bioenergy, and 5 GW of small hydro.
Adaptation
With a vast and diverse geography, India is susceptible to various climate impacts, such as floods, droughts, heatwaves, and sea-level rise. India`s adaptation measures under the Paris Agreement include building climate-resilient infrastructure, improving water-use efficiency, enhancing crop productivity, and strengthening early warning systems for extreme weather events.
Finance
As part of the Paris Agreement, developed countries committed to mobilizing US$100 billion annually by 2020 to support climate action in developing countries. India expects to receive a fair share of this funding to support its climate initiatives. However, as the country`s economy continues to grow, it has also committed to increasing its own financial contribution to climate action.
Conclusion
India`s Paris Agreement commitment is a significant step towards a sustainable future for the country and the world. However, meeting these targets will require a concerted effort from the government, private sector, civil society, and individuals. With a rapidly growing economy and population, India`s success in addressing climate change will have implications far beyond its borders. The global community must support India`s efforts to achieve its climate goals and ensure a brighter future for all.
